Willaston Church of England Primary School

Welcome To Forest School

We have established Forest School at Willaston to give all children regular opportunities to learn, achieve, develop self esteem and confidence in an outdoor setting. Forest school activities are planned to link closely to learning in the classroom, developing themes and ideas in a different setting. We are fortunate to have Willaston Meadow on our doorstep which is a fantastic resource to teach the children about our local environment.

The children will go outdoors in all weathers, all year round and will witness the environment changing with the seasons. Natural resources are used as much as possible to stimulate creative thinking and skills development.

We hope that by giving the children memorable learning experiences, they will develop a love and respect for their environment which they will take with them into their adult life.

Summer Term at Forest School

As we move from spring to summer, the meadow is really starting to come to life with beautiful birdsong, new leaves and flowers appearing and plentiful insects and mini beasts scuttling around once more.

Reception/Key Stage One

This term Reception will be playing games and doing plenty of exploring. They will start to learn the names of some of common birds, insects and mammals that live in our meadow.

The children in Year One will carry on observing the changing seasons, looking at what happens to life in the meadow when the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. They will be playing lots of games focusing on their listening skills and working together.

Year Two will be focusing on their science topic of ‘animals and their habitats’. The will look at what a food chain is and find out ‘what eats what’ in our local environment.

Key Stage Two

The children in Year Three will be focusing on their science topic of forces and keeping healthy.

Year Four will be continuing to make observations in the meadow and creating classification keys to group plants and animals.

Year Five will be continuing their science topic, investigating different forces and looking at mechanisms, including pulleys and levers.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have given up their time to help us at Forest School. The children get so much from visiting a different environment. If you would like to help during one or more sessions, please pop into the school office!
