Welcome To Forest School

We have established Forest School and outdoor learning at Willaston to give all children regular opportunities to learn, achieve, develop self-esteem and confidence in an outdoor setting. Forest school activities are planned to link closely to learning in the classroom, developing themes and ideas in a different setting. We are fortunate to have Willaston Meadow on our doorstep, which is a fantastic resource to teach the children about our local environment.

The children will go outdoors in all weathers, all year round and will witness the environment changing with the seasons. Natural resources are used as much as possible to stimulate creative thinking and skills development.

We hope that by giving the children memorable learning experiences, they will develop a love and respect for their environment which they will take with them into their adult life.

Autumn Term at Forest School

As we move from summer to autumn, the meadow is again changing rapidly. The meadow grass has had its annual mow, leaving a vast open area with less places to hide! The leaves on many trees are turning beautiful autumn colours and the temperature is definitely cooler!

Children must wear/bring the following to every forest school session:

· Waterproof Jacket and Trousers

· Wellies or Walking boots

· Warm clothing – plenty of layers, including long trousers, jumper, fleece, thermals

· Gloves/hat/scarf in cold weather

Please make sure that EVERY item of clothing is NAMED!

Children who have a morning session can come to school dressed in all their clothing ready for a prompt start. Please also bring spare clothes to change into after sessions, should clothing get wet – including shoes.

Reception/Key Stage One

This term Reception will be playing games and doing plenty of exploring in the meadow. They will learn the rules and boundaries of our site and develop their independence in getting themselves ready and choosing activities.

The children in Year One will be observing the changing seasons, looking at what happens to life in the meadow as the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter. They will be playing lots of games focusing on their listening skills and working together.

Year Two will be giving and following instructions, using a palm drill safely, developing trust by directing their friends blindfolded and using a traditional apple press to make apple juice.

Key Stage Two

The children in Year Three will be continuing their Ancient Egypt topic outdoors, building a shaduf, deciphering hieroglyphics and learning about the importance of Scarab beetles.

Year Four will be developing their empathy for soldiers in World War I, by role playing scenes in the trenches and building makeshift stretchers. They will also find out about life as a refugee.

Year Five will be continuing their South America topic and looking at key features of the globe.

Year Six children will develop their DT skills by learning knots and lashings and creating a functional ladder and designing and making a throne.

Thank you to all the volunteers (parents, grandparents of current pupils and ex-Willaston parents!) who willingly give up their time to help us at Forest School. The children get so much from visiting a different environment and we can only do so with the assistance of additional adults to maintain safety ratios. We are particularly short of helpers for afternoon sessions on Thursdays with Year Five and Six.

If you would like to help during one or more sessions with your child’s class or another year group, please pop into the school office to express your interest.
