Welcome To Forest School

We have established Forest School and outdoor learning at Willaston to give all children regular opportunities to learn, achieve, develop self-esteem and confidence in an outdoor setting. Forest school activities are planned to link closely to learning in the classroom, developing themes and ideas in a different setting. We are fortunate to have Willaston Meadow on our doorstep, which is a fantastic resource to teach the children about our local environment.

The children will go outdoors in all weathers, all year round and will witness the environment changing with the seasons. Natural resources are used as much as possible to stimulate creative thinking and skills development.

We hope that by giving the children memorable learning experiences, they will develop a love and respect for their environment which they will take with them into their adult life.

Autumn term

This autumn we will be trying to get out as much as possible. The weather can vary quite dramatically at this time of year, even from hour to hour, so please take time to view the forecast and send your children with appropriate kit (see the kit list below).

If your child has Forest School in the morning, it would be helpful if they could come into school already dressed in their water proofs and outdoor shoes. This helps reduce any time lost while getting changed and helps safeguard staff and younger children who might need help with tricky zips, puddle suits and shoe laces.

Unfortunately, as we cannot have parent helpers on site for the time being, due to COVID restrictions, we will be unable to go out to the meadow for our Forest School sessions. This will be kept under review and when it is deemed safe to do so we will be in touch. We are very lucky to have some fantastic learning areas around school which we can use for the time being.

Clothing

Children must wear/bring the following to every forest school session:

· Waterproof Jacket and Trousers
· Wellies or Walking boots
· Warm clothing – plenty of layers, including long trousers, jumper, fleece, thermals
· Gloves/hat/scarf in cold weather / sun hat and sun cream in the Summer

Please make sure that EVERY item of clothing is NAMED!

Children who have a morning session can come to school dressed in all their clothing ready for a prompt start. Please also bring spare clothes to change into after sessions, should clothing get wet – including shoes and spare socks.

Also please note that if your child does not come to school with the correct clothing or footwear, we are unable to guarantee spare clothing will be available as anything which is borrowed will need to be quarantined for 72 hours before it can be worn by another child.

Reception/Key Stage One

This term we will be looking to establish our rules and routines as Reception join us for the first time at Forest School at Willaston. We will be playing lots of games and exploring our school grounds. We will be looking at how to keep ourselves safe, wearing the correct clothes and observing the way our environment changes during these cold months.

The children in Year One will be observing the changing seasons and playing lots of games focusing on their listening skills. We will take part in activities related to their science topic of materials.

Year Two will also be looking at the seasonal change, as well as exploring hazards and how to manage risk. We will also think about what is needed by all living things to survive.

Key Stage Two

The children in Year Three will be learning about the Stone Age, learning some of the building techniques and how they foraged for food. We will also learn about rocks and soils and hopefully have a look at some fossils.

Year Four will think about the plastic problem, and enjoying activities to do with their topic of World War 2. Year Five will be exploring their science topic of forces, using levers and pulleys.

Children in Year Six will be working on some acting skills preparing a video for the Reception class they will also attempt to master some practical skills, including tying different knots and attempting to lash together some poles to create a structure.

Finally, a thank you to all the volunteers (parents, grandparents of current pupils and ex-Willaston parents!) who willingly gave up their time to help us at Forest School, last year. The children got so much from visiting a different environment and we look forward to welcoming you back once things can be done so safely.
