Willaston Church of England Primary School

Welcome To Forest School

We have established Forest School and outdoor learning at Willaston to give all children regular opportunities to learn, achieve, develop self-esteem and confidence in an outdoor setting. Forest school activities are planned to link closely to learning in the classroom, developing themes and ideas in a different setting. We are fortunate to have Willaston Meadow on our doorstep, which is a fantastic resource to teach the children about our local environment.

The children will go outdoors in all weathers, all year round and will witness the environment changing with the seasons. Natural resources are used as much as possible to stimulate creative thinking and skills development.

We hope that by giving the children memorable learning experiences, they will develop a love and respect for their environment which they will take with them into their adult life.

Summer Term at Forest School

Hopefully we will see some really great weather this term. However, we still need to be mindful of the weather forecast and equip ourselves appropriately. This term, in particular, we need to consider protecting ourselves against the effects of the sun, so please make sure children have had sun cream applied before school, and that they have a sun hat. Sun glasses are easily lost and broken so school cannot accept responsibility if these are brought in. For appropriate clothing see kit list below.

Children must wear/bring the following to every forest school session:

· Waterproof Jacket and Trousers

· Wellies or Walking boots

· Warm clothing – plenty of layers, including long trousers, jumper, fleece, thermals

· Gloves/hat/scarf in cold weather / sun hat and sun cream in the Summer

Please make sure that EVERY item of clothing is NAMED!

Children who have a morning session can come to school dressed in all their clothing ready for a prompt start. Please also bring spare clothes to change into after sessions, should clothing get wet – including shoes and spare socks.

Book topic

This term we will all be exploring our book topic ‘The Lost Words’. This is a beautiful book, all about some of the things found in nature that children are becoming less familiar with.
Each year group will be focussing on a selection of things, including a plant species, bird species, an animal species and they will also focus on an area of conservation.
The work done in the classroom will be complemented outside with work in Forest School. Where possible we will observe the living things in situ and learn about them. I would like to make sure each year group also gets to investigate the living things in our habitats, including investigating what lives in Jackson’s pond and in the meadow and woodland habitats.
Children in Year 6 will be working hard on their revision until SATS are over this term. After this we will be out again and enjoying the meadow with some fun activities before the summer.

Thank you to all the volunteers (parents, grandparents of current pupils and ex-Willaston parents!) who willingly give up their time to help us at Forest School. The children get so much from visiting a different environment and we can only do so with the assistance of additional adults to maintain safety ratios. We are still struggling to have suitable ratios with Y1, Y4 and Y5 so if you could help with those year groups, this would be appreciated. These sessions are on Thursdays.

If you would like to help during one or more sessions with your child’s class or another year group, please pop into the school office to express your interest.
